Regional Champs, Next Stop State!

The Lady Dogger softball team came out and shocked many people last week during the Regional tournament at Henryetta by achieving the title of Regional Champs. Dewey hasn’t made an appearance in the softball state tournament in 16 years, but that changes as the Lady Doggers will be heading there later this week.

During Thursday’s Class 3A regional opener against Valliant High, all players composed championship spirit and collective grit of committed warriors. Gabby Higbee was definitely at the top of the list. Higbee dove for a ball in the outfield as it short-hopped and hammered Higbee in the mouth. It loosened a tooth, which nearly came cleanout. Gabby exited the game due to the injury, but not for long. She came back in the batting lineup and blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, which helped energize the Lady Doggers to a victory 10-6.

Dewey also put away Henryetta, 13-9, in the semifinal. Lady Dogger senior Kelby Crawford recorded the biggest highlight in the competition, her first career homer. In fact, Dewey manufactured a total of six home runs on Thursday, “breaking the record of four set earlier this season.”(Niki Keck)

The Lady Doggers returned again on Friday to play Valliant for the championship. Dewey had already defeated Valliant the day before so it wasn’t a surprise that they won 10-3 to claim the Regional Championship title. Throughout the whole 2 days, each player contributed something positive for each game and the entire team played great as a whole. The team ended up with a total of 8 home runs for both days, six on Thursday, and 2 on Friday. It was just an all-around great couple of days for the Lady Doggers. Now it’s time to dominate at the State Tournament this Thursday-Saturday!
